PTSD – is, by its very name, a disorder that is triggered after a traumatic event. It may be almost immediately after, or it could be years later.
What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms often include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. PTSD can impair daily functioning and emotional well-being. Individuals may also experience avoidance behaviors, hyperarousal, and negative changes in mood or cognition. The condition affects both civilians and veterans (American Psychiatric Association).
Similarities to the Scott Peterson Case
The Los Angeles Innocence Project is currently handling the case of Scott Peterson, who was convicted in California two decades ago for the deaths of his 27-year-old pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn child. Peterson’s 2004 conviction was one of the most notorious murder trials in the state’s history. The Peterson case has been in the news and several docuseries have been aired with Peterson claiming his innocence.
I had a new client referred to me going through extreme panic and anxiety because her family had a similar history, and this news and the possibility of what could change has triggered her peace, well-being, and existence.
When the human mind cannot process or is forced to confront a traumatic event, it may block the memory, relegating it to the subconscious. This kind of repressed memory can resurface later in life, often manifesting as behavioral disorders, chronic depression, anxiety, or PTSD. This type of suppressed memory can show up much later like a behavioral disorder, chronic depression and anxiety, or PTSD.
Hypnotherapy Can Help
Hypnotherapy, a form of guided relaxation and focused attention, has been found helpful in treating PTSD. It allows individuals to access a deep state of relaxation, helping to uncover and address subconscious thoughts related to trauma. By working through traumatic memories in this relaxed state, patients may reduce the emotional impact of those experiences and reframe negative beliefs. Hypnotherapy can also assist in managing PTSD symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, and stress responses (Therapeutic Techniques, Barabasz & Watkins, 2005).
